چکیده

How does an ex ante contract affect behavior in an ex post renegotiation game? We address this question in a canonical buyer-seller relationship with renegotiation. Our paper provides causal experimental evidence that an initial contract has a highly significant and economically important impact on renegotiation behavior that goes beyond the effect of contracts on bargaining threat points. We compare situations in which an initial contract is renegotiated to strategically equivalent bargaining situations in which no ex ante contract was written. The ex ante contract causes sellers to ask for markups that are 45 percent lower than in strategically equivalent bargaining situations without an initial contract. Moreover, buyers are more likely to reject given markups in renegotiations than in negotiations. We do not find that these effects are stronger when the initial contract is concluded under competitive rather than monopolistic conditions.

Fairness Norms and Self - interest in Venture Capital / Entrepreneur Contracting and Performance

We consider the combined impact of agency problems and behavioural factors on venture capital/entrepreneur contracting and performance. Particularly, we develop a behavioural game-theoretic model in which a venture capitalist and an entrepreneur negotiate over their respective equity shares, and then exert value-adding efforts in running the business. Double-sided moral hazard exists in that bo...

The Impact of Fairness on Decision Making – An Analysis of Different Video Experiments

Experimentally observed deviations of behavior from game theoretic predictions suggest that fairness does influence decision making. Fairness in the sense of equality has become an essential element of economic models aiming at explaining actual behavior (cf. Fehr/Schmidt 1999, Bolton/Ockenfels 2000). In this paper I will argue that equality is not the only fairness norm to be taken into accoun...

When Equality is Unfair – Social Norms Between and Within Levels of a Hierarchy†

We analyze experimentally the role of vertical and horizontal fairness in labor relations with implicit contracts. We focus on two prominent wage schemes in firms with more than one agent: wage equality as an extreme form of wage compression and individual wage setting. We find that efforts and efficiency are significantly higher under individual wages. This is not caused by differences in mone...
